By connecting events like Emmett Till's story to the Spanish conquistador Hernando De Soto and linking other historical atrocities, the author argues that the enslavement of Africans wasn't America's original sin but a continuation of genocidal acts stemming from the first European contact with Native Americans. This reframing of American origins sheds light on how mass racial violence became the foundation for the philosophical framework of a democratic society, a paradox that persists today in the guise of white Christian nationalism.
