35:49Now PlayingSemaphor's Dave Weigel talks to Sam about what happened during the 2024 Iowa Caucus.
In January of a presidential election year, Iowa becomes a hub for journalists, with estimates suggesting a high ratio of reporters to supporters at events, such as one for Republican candidate Ron DeSantis, whose figure was around 28 reporters per supporter. At another event featuring influential evangelical leader Bob Vander Plaats, who supports DeSantis, the room was packed with media, leading to Vander Plaats emphasizing that the media doesn't determine the caucus winner. Over a thousand reporters sought credentials for the caucus-day media center, navigating the bitterly cold weather. The media coverage leading up to the caucus highlighted the freezing conditions with headlines like "Deep Freeze" and "In Iowa, a campaign season frozen in place."
