There's one sure way you can let the world - especially prospective tenants - know that CW Capital's decision to raise rents on 1,300 now-frantic tenants is just a symptom of its cold-blooded management style: Tell would-be renters what goes on beyond the lures of the Oval, the expanses of green, and the shiny new kitchens leasing agents will be showing off.

That's just what the Tenants Association is doing. Each Saturday and Sunday, armed with posters and flyers, we're standing quietly in front of the Leasing Office on First Avenue and 15th Street, educating the public about horrendous rent increases, laundryless buildings, bedbugs on the loose, unsolved burglaries, and the other negatives the 25,000 of us who live here confront.

No loud demonstrations, no picketing - just stepping forward to hand out a flyer and say a few words to those looking for a comfortable place to lay their heads.

Longtime rent-stabilized residents are working with former market-rate tenants now facing stupefying rent increases or forced departure from the community in which they have put down roots.

This newest threat to the stability of Stuy Town-Peter Cooper affects us all.

So come raise your voice and stand with your neighbors. Spend a half-hour or an hour of your weekend to protect your home and your future. Pick a time convenient to you to go to the leasing office on First Avenue at 15th Street. The office is open on Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 5pm, and Sunday, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Spend just 30 minutes or more distributing flyers and talking with prospective renters.
