Inspired in part by Jesse Jackson's first run for the presidency, Reaganomics and love; this song presents an unusual juxtaposition of lyrical ideas. Even with the "rainbow coalition" phrase, which has taken on a whole new meaning these days, the song's first verse could easily be attributed to Barack Obama's 2008 campaign themes of "hope and change" and its second verse to the current Occupy Wall Street movement nearly twenty years after the song's conception.
I read the Daily Blues, I watch the news on television
I see the poverty, the corporate greed, the disillusioned
Should be the final straw but we must draw our own conclusions
