On October 14, I was filming at 26 Federal Plaza. My colleagues and I are there most days, bearing witness to the cruelty of the random family separations, the crying children, the anguish and heartache of loved ones being ripped apart. The helpless betrayal of the American dream.
Shirlan was accompanying her friend, whose boyfriend was attending his scheduled immigration court date.
We have no idea how they wind up on “the list”, the daily quota mandated by Stephen Miller, the rolled pieces of paper ICE agents refer to as each person enters the court.
Earlier that morning, Shirlan realized the Indian Burial Ground Monument was across the street. So she went in and prayed to her ancestors and put out ‘into the universe’ good thoughts. She knew she”would be protected.”
But today was good news. The boyfriend had been given a continuance by the judge to return to court on November 30th to plead his case for asylum. But when he left the court, he was surrounded by ICE and disappeared down a back stairwell.
Most of all, thank you to the thousands of well wisher with whom her words resonated.
