The August 9 shooting death of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a police officer in Ferguson, Missouri ignited protests that have become increasingly intense for over a week. Mostly minority protesters have clashed with authorities in escalating nightly demonstrations, which have led Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon to declare a state of emergency and triggered the deployment of the National Guard to the St. Louis suburb.
