An estimated 113 million tons of coal ash - the toxic byproduct of coal-fired power plants - are produced annually in the US. Coal ash is stored in almost every state with little government oversight and few safeguards in place. When spills occur, nearby communities and ecosystems pay the price.
Neha Shastry traveled across the US for VICE News to meet the people and visit the areas most affected by this toxic waste.
