Iraqi forces drove Islamic State group out of Qayyarah in the run-up to the Mosul offensive — and the retreating militants have left a toxic legacy behind.

As IS fighters retreated, they set fire to oil wells in the area, and months later, blazes are still burning. Over 1,000 people have been treated for exposure to poisonous smoke from the burning oil wells and sulfur stocks. With the main hospital heavily damaged in fighting, the only treatment available to those affected by the fires is an under-resourced clinic, where everything is stained black from smoke.

Hind Hassan reports from Qayyarah on the new health crisis in northern Iraq.
