President-elect Donald Trump selected retired General James Mattis to be his defense secretary last week.

Mattis is a conventional pick in that he has a sterling military record. He served 43 years in the Marine Corps and led marines into Afghanistan after 9/11, into Baghdad in 2003, and into Fallujah in 2004.

“Be polite, be professional, but have a plan to kill everybody you meet,” Mattis told a crowd of marines in August 2006.
