YouTube Description
as posted by the channelIn the mid 2000s, Hazleton, Pennsylvania, was in a steep economic decline, with jobs dwindling and solid incomes scarce. Local lawmakers put the blame on a newly arriving population of Latino immigrants, pushing through a series of ordinances that would make English the official language of town, and ban landlords from renting to the undocumented. Those ordinances never came into effect, and ten years later, the city is fifty percent Latino, and seems to be on the rebound. VICE News Tonight correspondent Josh Hersh went to Hazleton to see how some American towns are facing a choice between preserving their identity, and saving their economy. VICE News Tonight airs weeknights on HBO at 7:30pm.
