With president-elect Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos– a staunch supporter of charter schools and voucher programs– for education secretary, many public school educators find themselves once again threatened by the potential privatization of schools on Trump’s loose ed platform of “school choice.” Los Angeles, the U.S.’s second largest school district is no stranger to school choice as LAUSD is a choice district. Students and family already have to “vote with their feet.” The impact of school choice on LAUSD to date has been poor enrollment and teacher shortages but public school leaders are starting to catch onto the charter school game by marketing their schools.
