3:41Now PlayingOn Tuesday, more than 8,000 Starbucks stores in the US closed for the afternoon as employees were put through training. For four hours, employees nationwide watched short documentaries, wrote in notebooks, and discussed their own feelings about bias.
Most of the material is focused on showing employees what it's like to be black in America – getting followed in stores, or being afraid to even go outside.
But for black employees, is this helpful? Or worse, might it be even be traumatic?
It's a little hard to know how baristas — black, white or otherwise — actually feel about the training, because Starbucks won't allow media to interview them.
VICE News visited a tightly controlled media interview session to see just how optimistic Starbucks’ upper management is about training people to not be racist.
