Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for those behind the Saudi journalist’s death to be held accountable for their actions under international law.
Yet in recent years Turkey has also, very publically, silenced dissenting voices.
In March, VICE News visited the office of a small newspaper called Afrika, in Northern Cyprus - which had recently felt the wrath of President Erdogan.
President Erdogan had openly urged his supports in Northern Cyprus to retaliate against the paper after it published a front page headline criticising his government’s military operation against the Kurds in Syria.
