Got a Fortnite Tutor? Boosters Will Make Sure You Still Suck (HBO)

Even if you don’t play video games, you’ve probably heard of Fortnite. It has over 200 million users, seasonal tournaments where the winner can take home up to $100 million in prize money, and countless aspiring pro gamers streaming their gameplay online. But it’s not an easy game — the game combines a Hunger Games style, last-player-standing gun fight with the ability to build your own cover. The game’s maps and weaponry are also constantly changing, which has created a very steep learning curve.

There are two ways to go about improving your stats: the honest way, and cheating.

For about $15 per session, a tutor can coach you through different techniques to improve your aiming and building. Corey Sousa, a 28 year old computer software salesman, has taken up Fortnite tutoring as his side hustle. He says he’s seen an increase in parents seeking out services like his for their kids. “To me, it isn't different than like someone whose kid wants to get better guitar or piano,” he says. “Get them a few lessons, like maybe their kid won't be the next Justin Bieber or Nirvana drummer or whatever, but he might gain some confidence.” Sousa says that after practicing, some of his students have gone on to win money in tournaments.

For people who don’t want to practice, there’s an alternative. High ranking players will log into your account and “boost” your level, kill and win count for a price. The more gameplay required, the higher the cost. Christopher Eldabh became a full time booster since last year, and even contracts some of his friends to help him complete his orders. Even though this business is controversial among gamers, he doesn’t think what he is doing is wrong.
