Speaking in the wake of the killing of Labour MP Jo Cox, Mr Khan said: "I think the way we conduct politics can inspire people, put people off, can lead to a poison environment, the way politics is conducted in this country is poisonous.
"The British public is wonderful, decent, the way we behave is not decent – there is hate, there is poison, and we have to change."
