James Harding, who was previously the director of BBC News, gave his support in an interview to Sky's Dermot Murnaghan.
He said that leaders of the country being tested and quizzed together 'really matters'.
The campaign has gained support from the leaders of the Liberal Democrats and Labour along with former home secretary Amber Rudd.
A poll for Sky Data found that 81% of the public believe that politicians try to avoid questions from voters.
