3:00Now PlayingSky News was given special access to an experimental nuclear plant where there is no active radioactive waste to dispose of.
Being built by The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Marseille with support of UK engineers.
When switched on, it will fuse together hydrogen atoms, releasing immense amounts of carbon-free energy in the process.
However a significant difference is at their plant there won’t be any long-lived radioactive waste.
Two forms of hydrogen gas will be injected into a reactor called a tokamak and heated to 150 million degrees Celsius - ten times hotter than the Sun.
The hydrogen can be extracted from seawater but unlike current nuclear power-plants there is no highly active radioactive waste to dispose of.
Bernard Bigot, director general, told Sky News that solar and wind energy alone is too unpredictable to meet the demands of a world.
He said: “That is why renewable energy will not be enough. When there is no sun or wind you could use fusion.”
The facility is an international cooperation among the European Union, Russia, the US, Japan, China, India and South Korea.
Scientists believe it will power the second half of the century, when fossil fuels will have been consigned to history because of their role in global warming.
