Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ARTs) have been used as an effective treatment for the disease, but the drugs are now failing in a number of cases.
A triple-resistant strain has emerged in northern Cambodia, where the standard antimalarial drug has been failing in 60% of cases.
If this were to spread to Africa, where 90% of the world's malaria cases are, the results could be catastrophic.
But there is hope - a team of experts are trialling a concoction of three antimalarial treatments in one of Cambodia's worst-hit regions.
