Speaking at the White House he declared a national emergency, a move that will free up billions of dollars of emergency funds, but will almost certainly face a legal challenge.
It has already been described as a violation of the US constitution.
The president claims a wall was the only way to stop the US being invaded by illegal immigrants, criminals and drugs.
