The record for the hottest ever July day was broken with a temperature of 38.1 degrees celsius recorded in Cambridge
The previous high for July 36.7C was set at Heathrow in 2015.
Temperatures were also soaring in Europe with new records being set in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany and Paris.
