13:03Now PlayingVadym Prystaiko, the Ukrainian ambassador to the UK, today told Sky News that there is "not much of Soledar left" - but Russia needs to present some kind of win to Vladimir Putin.
A fierce battle is understood to be ongoing in the eastern town, with Kyiv insisting Ukrainian defenders are "holding out" against the Russians.
Mr Prystaiko also discussed the leadership shake-up at the top of the Russian military, saying that perhaps Mr Putin himself "will have to command his troops" should this latest appointment fail.
