So have they worked - and could even more pressure be applied?
Financier and author Bill Browder, who was once the largest foreign investor in Russia but is now a Kremlin critic, believes sanctions were enforced too late.
Speaking to Sky News, he said sanctions can be "very powerful" as a deterrent, but the West has used them as a punishment, and that's going to change Vladimir Putin's mind about the invasion.
