Title 42 is from the 1944 Public Health Act which grants US authorities emergency powers to prevent the spread of diseases.
Using the coronavirus pandemic as a justification, Title 42 became part of the Trump-era immigration policy, preventing many migrants attempting to cross the border from Mexico - including those seeking asylum.
Biden kept the policy in place when he took office in January 2021, citing public health concerns but on May 11, 2023, Title 42 will be no more.
