7:11Now PlayingSenior midwife Donna Ockenden has warned maternity services across the UK are under "tremendous pressure" due to underfunding and staff shortages.
Speaking to Sky News, Ms Ockenden said in England alone there is a shortage of 2,000 midwives, forcing existing staff to work "thousands and thousands of hours of unpaid overtime".
She is currently leading an investigation into more than 1,700 cases of possible harm to newborn babies and mothers at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
