HS2 and Rail Minister Huw Merriman has told Sky News the decision to axe the northern leg of HS2 was based on the fact that the £36bn for the project "can be better spent across other northern cities."

Rishi Sunak announced his decision on the railway line with a promise to spend the money freed up from scrapping it on hundreds of other transport schemes across the country instead.
