as posted by the channelTransport Secretary Mark Harper was asked about criticism from the likes of former prime minister David Cameron about the decision to scrap the remaining project.
He said: "The facts have changed, the costs of the project have escalated. The patterns of travel have changed post-pandemic. So, facts have changed and this government has taken a different decision."
Mr Harper said this decision is in the "interests of the country".
It will allow the UK to invest £36bn on transport infrastructure across the North and Midlands instead, he said.
"That's a decision that I'm proud of."
