The rebel group, which supports Hamas in its war with Israel, has vowed to target vessels which it believes are heading to and from Israel.
The disruption to usual trade flows is expected to result in higher prices and delays, which will only intensify the longer the disruption lasts, as alternative routes can add thousands of miles to shipping journeys - as Sky's business correspondent Paul Kelso reports.
