Junior doctors have started their longest strike in NHS history, which is due to last six days.

Members of the British Medical Association (BMA) took to picket lines outside hospitals across the UK, including St Thomas' in London, Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham and Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

Health service executives have said the strike could mean "one of the most difficult starts to the year the NHS has ever faced".
