Water firms have been told by the industry regulator they will not be allowed to issue large bill hikes to fund infrastructure investment.

All water companies had asked for hefty increases, with Southern Water leading the way with a proposed rise of almost 73%.

They said the hikes were needed for projects such as improving pipe networks to reduce leakage.

However, Ofwat limited bill rises to around £19 a year, or 21% over the period.

The industry has long been accused of prioritising bonuses and shareholder dividends over investment in infrastructure.

Ofwat boss David Black spoke to Kay Burley.
