Announcing his withdrawal, Mr Kennedy - also known as RFK Jr - said: "In my heart, I no longer believe that I have a realistic path to electoral victory".
The decision will be a blow to Kamala Harris, who accepted her party's presidential nomination last night amid euphoric scenes at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.
