The White House says the relocation of Palestinians from Gaza would only be "temporary" as it appeared to row back on Donald Trump's plan to "own" Gaza.

In a surprise announcement, the US president said the US would take control of the Strip with neighbouring countries asked to house millions of displaced Palestinians.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told US media that Palestinians could leave and come back - the country's defence minister on Thursday said "special arrangements" were being made for Palestinians to leave.

Trump's plans were widely criticised across the Middle East and by the EU.
