When asked if Shabana Mahmood was prepared to be unpopular by Sky's Sophy Ridge, she said: "The thing I'm prepared to do is to make sure we never ever run out of prison places again. At the moment as things stand today by November we go down to zero."
She went on to criticise the previous government for leaving them in this position and added that she was "prepared to do whatever it takes to keep this country safe, to make sure we never run out of prison places and we never see the collapse of the prison system or our wider law and order system."
