It comes after accusations from opponents that the prime minister knew the true extent of Mandelson's association with the convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein before being forced to sack him.
But Baroness Smith denied this and said: "Knowing the information we know now, clearly Peter Mandelson wouldn't have been selected.
"That's why when that information became clear last Wednesday afternoon, the prime minister quickly made the decision to remove Peter Mandelson."
