8:06Now PlayingBoris Becker has told Sky News how a fellow prisoner threatened to slit his throat after he spoke to him "in the wrong way".
Speaking to Sarah-Jane Mee, he said his time in prison was a daily "fight for survival" where who you knew determined whether you would make it to the end of the day without getting assaulted, and where everything was available to buy - including hard drugs.
The three-time Wimbledon champion was jailed for two-and-a-half years for hiding his assets and loans from creditors. He spent eight months in prison before being deported to his homeland, Germany. He is banned from returning to the UK.
The Ministry of Justice said action was being taken to improve prison conditions.
“The government inherited a prison system in crisis overcrowded, crumbling infrastructure and our hard-working prison staff at risk of violence and harm," a spokesman said.
“We have already taken action to improve safety, security and conditions at HMP Wandsworth. We have deployed specialist staff and will redirect £100 million to be spent over five years.”
