Speaking to Trevor Phillips he added: "Children bore the brunt of austerity. But the pandemic, we made sure children bore the brunt of that, they were the ones who were locked down.
"All these things, children have had a very bad time the last 14 or 15 years. It is within the gift of government to change that."
