Shadow chancellor Sir Mel Stride has pledged that the Conservatives would end business rates for pubs and shops on "our high streets".

Speaking on the main stage at party conference, Stride said this will be funded by getting "public spending under control".

He added tax will be "finished, gone" if they enter government for "shops and pubs on our high streets".

The next election is not set to take place until 2029.
