Melissa, the strongest storm of the year, has now overtaken Katrina to become the seventh most intense Atlantic hurricane on record.
Latest data shows the huge storm bearing down on Jamaica has an air pressure in its centre of 901 millibars (mb), just ahead of Hurricane Katrina, which reached 902mb.
Melissa matches Katrina's maximum sustained windspeed of 175mph.
