Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy said the BBC remains "one of the most trusted sources of news" in the UK, that "has a responsibility to uphold the highest standards".

She acknowledged the concerns many MPs hold about the BBC are "serious" but said some in the Commons "have gone even further suggesting that the BBC is institutionally biased".

She said MPs who are attacking the BBC "for not expressing views they agree with - should consider just what is at stake".
