Tim Davie said the organisation needed to "fight for our journalism".
"It just does good work and that speaks louder than any newspaper and any weaponisation," he said.
Mr Davie and BBC News CEO Deborah Turness quit at the weekend over a Panorama documentary that misleadingly edited a Donald Trump speech.
