5:35Now PlayingFounder of the Big Issue magazine, Lord John Bird has called for early intervention from the government to prevent poverty and stop homelessness.
He told Sky News: "If you look at the figures and you look at the people who are falling into homelessness, a lot of the people have come from limited education opportunities, they've come from poverty, they've inherited poverty from their families, and they therefore are on the back foot at the very beginning of life."
Although they may succeed at first, he continues, something bad may happen, leading them into long-term unemployment, and then homelessness.
He argued that 'if you make the investment in the early stages of people's lives so that poverty is not passed on, the issue can be addressed'.
