2:51Now PlayingBurnham denies claim he was told about by-election block before putting name forward
YouTube Description
as posted by the channelAndy Burnham has said it is "simply untrue" that he was told he would be blocked from standing as Labour's candidate in the upcoming Gorton and Denton by-election before he sought permission to put his name forward.
He said: "It is simply untrue to say that I was told that I would be blocked, so I can't say any more than that. I went through the whole weekend having conversations with people in Number 10, people in senior positions to the party, to discuss the pros and cons and that's all I can say.
"It's simply untrue to say there was a message given that I will definitely be blocked because, after all, the National Executive Committee (NEC) is meant to be an independent body."
