With Russian tanks rolling towards them in February 2022, Sumy's citizens were faced with a terrifying reality: the Ukrainian paratroopers stationed in their city had been ordered to withdraw.

That meant it was on them to help defend their city.

And that's exactly what they did.

The city never fell into enemy hands.

For their courage, Sumy was declared a Hero City by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

On the fourth anniversary of Vladimir Putin's invasion, Sky News has spoken to residents about life less than 20 miles from the Russian border - and whether they think peace will come this year.
