In a statement just released, Iran's president has insisted revenge is a "legitimate right and duty".
Masoud Pezeshkian, whose fate has been unclear, is reported as saying in the statement that the killing of the supreme leader is an "open war against Muslims".
"The Islamic Republic of Iran considers bloodshed and revenge against the perpetrators and commanders of this crime as its legitimate duty and right, and will fulfill this great responsibility and duty with all its might," he added.
His death, he said, is the "greatest affliction of the Islamic world today".
He described the supreme leader's rule as a "great and divine leadership" that relied on the "will, vote and opinion of the people".
For clarity, the supreme leader was and is deeply unpopular among many Iranians, both inside the country and among the diaspora. He could not be voted out by the people, who have taken to the streets in huge numbers on several occasions during the course of his 37-year rule.
But Pezeshkian insisted in his statement he "gave honour and dignity to the Iranian nation".
