Sir Charlie Bean, economist and former deputy governor of the Bank of England for monetary policy, says the energy price shock as a result of the Iran war is "clearly very unwelcome," not just for the public but also for the government.

"The fact that we have to pay more for our energy as a result of the conflict in the Gulf makes us, as a nation, poorer and worse off. And there's no way we can avoid that," he says.
