15:16Now PlayingRussia's defence ministry has confirmed one of its warships fired warning shots "pre-emptively" in the English Channel today.
The "small arms" fire from the frigate Admiral Grigorovich came because a British civilian sailing yacht, named by Moscow as Bright Future, was "following a dangerous course", the ministry said in a statement shared in Russian on Telegram.
Earlier, the British Ministry of Defence confirmed it was investigating what happened, but the Russian account seems to tally with what UK defence sources have been telling Sky News.
Deborah Haynes, our security and defence editor, reported earlier that the Russian ship fired a couple of warning shots close to a UK-registered yacht in the Channel after also sounding an alert to avoid it sailing too close, according to a UK defence source.
