Lebanon Is Trapped Between Israel and Hezbollah

Lebanon is caught in the middle of a brutal power struggle between Israel, Hezbollah, Iran, and the Lebanese government. In this reaction, I break down why Lebanon is in such a dangerous position — and why Hezbollah’s role as Iran’s proxy may keep the country trapped in conflict.

The video explains how Hezbollah has repeatedly dragged Lebanon into wars with Israel on behalf of Iran, while the Lebanese government under Joseph Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam faces pressure to disarm Hezbollah and restore state control.

Israel, meanwhile, is pressuring Lebanon from the south by targeting Hezbollah infrastructure and making it clear that it will not allow another October 7th-style threat to build along its northern border. From Israel’s point of view, Hezbollah cannot be allowed to remain armed and entrenched right next to Israeli communities.

The problem is that Lebanon is stuck. If Beirut cooperates with Israel, Hezbollah and Iran can accuse the government of betrayal. If Lebanon refuses to disarm Hezbollah, Israel will likely continue military pressure. And if Iran gets more money, leverage, and regional breathing room, Hezbollah may become even harder to dismantle.

I give my reaction to the argument that Lebanon may have had a rare chance to break away from Hezbollah — but that chance could collapse if Israel, Iran, and the West all keep pulling Lebanon in opposite directions.
