Moshe Feiglin Explains Israel’s True Purpose

In episode 274 of Soothing Semantics, I sit down with former Knesset member, Zahut founder, IDF veteran, author, and political philosopher Moshe Feiglin for a deep conversation about Jewish identity, Zionism, the purpose of the State of Israel, the IDF, Haredi enlistment, Gaza, sovereignty, and what it really means to build a Jewish state.

Moshe Feiglin argues that before we can understand what a Jewish state is, we first have to understand what Judaism is. He defines Judaism as the covenant between the people of Israel and the God of Israel, beginning with the Exodus from Egypt and continuing through Mount Sinai. From there, he explains why the Jewish people need a state — not merely to survive, but to fulfill a national and spiritual mission.

We also discuss whether Israel is confused between being a Western democracy and a Middle Eastern Jewish state, why Feiglin believes Israel loses its justification when it tries to become “a nation like all nations,” and why Jewish sovereignty must be rooted in identity, purpose, Jerusalem, and the Land of Israel.

Later in the conversation, we get into the Haredi draft crisis, Feiglin’s proposal for basic military training for all Israelis, why he believes the IDF should stop being used as a progressive ideological tool, and how Israel can create a stronger army while respecting religious Jews and strengthening national unity.
