Mamdani says New York City’s five government-run grocery stores will sell fresh produce, meat, seafood, milk, bread, cheese, and other essential products at prices 30% below typical retail.
It sounds like a great deal for shoppers—but what happens to the thousands of bodegas, supermarkets, and family-owned grocery stores that still have to pay rent, wages, taxes, utilities, and normal wholesale prices?
In this reaction, I respond to Cash Jordan’s report on Mamdani’s city-run grocery plan and explain why artificially underpriced government stores could threaten the small businesses that make New York’s neighborhoods unique.
