Saudi peace advocate Loay Alshareef delivers a powerful argument about Jewish history, Zionism and the Jewish connection to the Land of Israel.

In this reaction, Rafi Harel responds to Alshareef as he argues that Jews are not foreign colonialists in Israel, but an indigenous people returning to their ancestral homeland. He traces the word “Jew” back to Judea and points to ancient historical evidence connecting the Jewish people to Jerusalem.

One of Loay’s most striking examples is the Arch of Titus in Rome, which depicts Roman soldiers carrying the menorah after the destruction of Jerusalem. He argues that this physical evidence undermines claims that there was never a Jewish Temple or ancient Jewish presence in Jerusalem.

But the speech goes beyond Jewish history.

Loay also calls for the deradicalization of Gaza and parts of the Arab and Muslim world, while drawing a distinction between peaceful Muslims and radical Islamists. He argues that Muslims who want peaceful coexistence should not be conflated with extremist movements.

He even responds to the phrase “Free Palestine” with his own message:

Free Palestine from Hamas.

Rafi agrees strongly with Loay’s recognition of Jewish history and his support for Israel, but also challenges parts of his argument—particularly his distinction between Islam and Islamism and whether his optimistic vision accurately reflects Palestinian attitudes and the realities of the conflict.
