Was Soviet food actually higher quality than ours? Historian Julie Hessler explains why the USSR’s lack of corporate “innovation” sometimes meant healthier, more natural food compared to the U.S. today.

This shouldn’t be taken as praise for the Soviet Union. Rather, it should force us to look at how corporate capture has driven down the quality of our food to the point that the USSR, a country we associate with shortages, actually avoided the worst of what we consume.
